My dislike for "The Niche" concept
“Niche
/niCH,nēSH/
a specialized segment of the market for a particular kind of product or service.”
When you start to build an online platform whether you have a physical product, a service you’re offering, or you are building a community - the algorithm tells you to have a target audience or niche.
For someone with a physical product, it is easy to target an audience. Who will use this product? You can easily run reporting (if you have the proper marketing tools) to find out the individuals purchasing your products. Same thing with a service. The content you post to social media will stay targeting these individuals and it is designed this way to drive sales.
Content creators that have the purpose of growing an entertainment social media platform, they make money in a different way. If you owned a platform such as Tiktok, Instagram, Facebook, Youtube, Twitch, etc the more users there are the more money you generate. Having people log on to see their favorite content creators this drives people back to the platform. I don’t know about you, but I have a few people I log on to see their latest posts for entertainment purposes, or to buy their next product. These platforms want these content creators to continue what they are doing which is bringing users to the platform.
Other ways to earn an income on social media are as follows:
UGC - User generated content
Brand partnership
Digital products/services
Product promotions
Affiliated Marketing
People are always creating new ways as time progresses.
Back to my original title that I dislike the concept of niche?
It puts people in a box and it is how the algorithm is made for these platforms. Take me for example: I’m a Christian, a mother, a wife, a photographer, I budget my finances well, I cook, clean and shop like any mother but I am also heavy on entrepreneurship, and also mental wellness in my journey with an anxiety disorder while also making content!
See? That was a lot. So who is my target audience? Moms!
Because we do a lot!
I just want to share my life but I do have plans on a return on investment for doing so. That’s where all of my energy pumps out and I get paid in return eventually. Big plans to execute. A lot of work not so much time but we are going to make it because… Goals!
