The 7 Pillars of Wisdom

Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars.
— Proverbs 9:1

While reading the word yesterday, I came across the mention of seven pillars of wisdom.

As I read this I wanted to learn more about what the seven pillars of wisdom actually were.

I searched for another scripture that discussed specifically about the different aspects regarding wisdom. First, why is this important? As a Christian, the understanding that the wisdom of God comes from God alone as a gift to us is key to acquiring wisdom. We can agree that investing in your relationship with God and truly applying his word to your life, you will begin to acquire true wisdom from the Lord that helps you with dealing with trials that may come up in your life.

It is known that Solomon was the wisest man in the old testament, he wrote the book of Proverbs inspired by God to bring revelation of wisdom to all of those who spend time reading Proverbs. There are so many amazing golden nuggets lying in Proverbs, there for us to learn, apply and grow. As I mentioned earlier let’s focus on Proverbs 9:1 and the seven pillars.

The foundation of the house of wisdom is “the fear of the Lord… the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10). One does not finally reach the Lord through much study and the acquisition of much wisdom. The fear of the Lord is the very “beginning of wisdom.” Having a reverent trust in the God of creation and redemption is important because without it there can be no true wisdom. “For other foundation can no man lay than… Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 3:11).

The answer to the seven pillars of wisdom lies in the New testament book of wisdom, the Book of James. “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God” (James 1:5). Then, “a wise man and endued with knowledge… [will] show out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom” (James 3:13).

But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.
— James 3:17

More specifically, the seven great pillars are listed plainly in James 3:17.

  1. Pure

  2. Peaceable

  3. Gentle

  4. Easy to be entreated (reasonableness)

  5. Full of mercy

  6. Good fruits

  7. Without partiality (humility) & Without hypocrisy (sincerity)

Be diligent and transparent with God and with yourself about the above list. This is such a weighty word. Do you exhibit these traits? Take some time to meditate on his word and self-reflect. Purge things that do not allow you to exhibit the traits on this list.

Purity was listed first. In modern days, purity is one of the hardest things to keep. With a world so easily perverse, purity is so very rare, but it is important that we remain pure and innocent before the Lord. Purity is followed by the other vital pillars and with all of these traits, the Lord will bless you with wisdom when you fear him and trust him.

I pray that everyone reading this, will be blessed by the seven pillars of wisdom in Jesus name.
